WORLD GOLF TEACHERS CUP…RESULTS
TEAM CARIBBEAN, RICHARDS TAKE WORLD GOLF TEACHERS
CUP TITLES
AUSSIE DOURIS SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS US GOLF TEACHERS
CUP
When 193 teaching
professionals from around the world get together for four days of
competition in two big events, just outside the city where whatever
happens there stays there, a buzz like no other is generated. The
8th biennial World Golf Teachers Cup and the 12th annual United
States Golf Teachers Cup, held this past October 23-26 in Boulder
City, Nevada (just outside Las Vegas), provided the atmosphere of
great competition among good friends and international neighbors.
Team Caribbean,
consisting of captain Anthony Benny, Ricky Campbell, and Christopher
Richards, all from Trinidad & Tobago, along with Miguel Suarez
(Puerto Rico), Herbert Con (Curacao), and Tim Mangal (St. Lucia),
took home a seven-stroke victory over five-time champion Team USA,
732-739, at Boulder City Golf Course and Boulder Creek Golf Club,
the host courses. Each team counted five scores each day from six
players. Canada finished third at 742.
In the $25,000
individual championship, Richards made it three World Cups in a row
where the individual champion also was a member of the winning team.
He fired rounds of 67-71 – 138, establishing new 18- and 36- hole
scoring records for the event, while edging out fellow Team
Caribbean member Suarez by one stroke. As the individual and team
championships were played concurrently, having the low two
individuals proved too much for the USA and other teams to overcome.
Team USA was lead by Tipo Toomalatai at 71- 72 – 143, while Canada
was paced by former US and World Cup champion Dave Belling’s 73-73 –
146.
Prior to the playing
of the World Golf Teachers Cup, the United States Golf Teachers Cup,
the national championship of the USGTF, was held on the same
courses. A purse of $25,000 was also in the mix. James Douris from
Australia captured the Cup for the second year in a row, firing
rounds of 72-68 – 140 to defeat Americans Ken Morton (73-69 – 142)
and Toomalatai (70-72 – 142) by two strokes. Suarez and the
long-hitting Andy Wills were another stroke back at 143.
Toomalatai could
console himself with the Senior championship, though, as he bested
Jim Perez (72-75 – 147) by five strokes. Jill Scally repeated as
Ladies champion, taking a three-stroke victory over newcomer
Samantha Cebrero. Repeat champions seemed to be the theme of this
year’s US Cup, with Joe Bernat successfully defending his Super
Senior title.
Besides Richards
taking both the overall and Open division titles in the World Cup,
Anna Yu once again captured the Ladies championship with record
scores for 18 and 36 holes by shooting 74-71 – 143, defeating Scally
by eight shots. Super Senior-aged Jerry Moore continued his
plundering of the “young guys” by winning the Senior title with
scores of 72-70 – 142, nipping Toomalatai by one shot and preventing
the Hawaiian from sweeping both individual division crowns. Moore
was also the Senior champion from the 2006 US Cup. The Super Senior
division saw a first-time winner in Walt Abraham, as his 76-73 – 149
beat runnerup William Gunderman by two strokes.
USGTF president Geoff
Bryant was pleased how both events were received by the
participants.
“We heard many
comments at how well run the events were,” stated Bryant. “Our
thanks go to tournament coordinator Robert Kleabir, and tournament
directors Mark Harman and Thomas Wartelle, who worked tirelessly to
make sure everyone had a memorable tournament experience. I also
want to mention that many members got a chance to meet the USGTF
office staff, with Jennifer Conrad and Suzy Johnson of membership
services serving as starters, along with Rick Beebe, Sam Bryant, and
Christine Darnbrough. Their efforts contributed a great deal to
making these events such a success.”
The 9th biennial
edition of the World Golf Teachers Cup will be held in Australia in
2009, hosted by the Australian Golf Teachers Federation under the
guidance of its president, Gary Cooney, and course director Andrew
Cartledge. At press time, the location of the 13th annual United
States Golf Teachers Cup was narrowed down to two potential sites.
Details will be posted shortly after press time on www.usgtf.com,
and will also be contained in the next issue of Golf Teaching Pro.
