After several years of strong play, Canada’s Grant Gulych broke through to win the 2013 United States Golf Teachers Cup October 7-8 at Tunica National Golf Club in Tunica Resorts, Mississippi. Gulych’s two-day score of 78-69 – 147 topped runner-up and defending champion Bill Hardwick by four strokes.
Conditions were very difficult the first day as extremely high winds, combined with fast greens, made for a tough test, as evidenced by the low round of 75 by Bruce Sims, another perennial contender. Conditions eased somewhat the second day and the scores reflected this as the field average came down considerably. Gulych fired five birdies and an eagle at the field the second round, and no one could keep pace.
The Open division was captured by Matt Smith for the second consecutive year. Smith opened with an 81 but came back in strong fashion with a 71, tieing Cole Golden at 152. Smith won on the second playoff hole. Another playoff decided the Ladies division as Jenny Brock also won on the second hole, defeating Kathy Hester. Gulych, playing in the Senior division, captured that title, and Hardwick won the Super Senior division. Donald Smith won the Legends division.
