For the past several years, the PGA Tour season has carried over from the fall season one year into the summer season the next. All that will change when the schedule reverts to a calendar-year-only model, with the final event being the Tour Championship in August. Tournaments currently in the fall season are now in limbo as to what their future holds.
In the meantime, a series of “elevated events” featuring purses of $20 million and more are now on offer for PGA Tour members, with the top 20 in the Player Impact Program semi-obligated to play in each event in order to bring the top players together more often. How this affects tournaments that don’t have elevated status remains to be seen, but it’s safe to say that these events will give other players a chance to shine.
