American women have won the first three majors of the 2014 season. Lexi Thompson captured the Kraft Nabisco Championship, Michelle Wie took home the US Women’s Open trophy, and Mo Martin won the Women’s British Open.
Wait…Mo Martin?
A late bloomer, Martin played collegiate golf at UCLA, turning professional in 2005. She toiled in the minor leagues for years, finally earning her LPGA Tour card in 2012 after a stellar season on the developmental Symetra Tour in 2011. There was nothing to indicate Martin would be a contender at this year’s majors, considering she had no top-10 finishes. But the 5-foot-2 Martin found the Royal Birkdale course to her liking, making a dramatic eagle on the 72nd hole after her approach shot from over 200 yards clanked off the flagstick, setting up a six-foot birdie putt on the par-5 finishing hole. She finished her life-changing week with a one-shot victory over proven champions Shanshan Feng and Suzann Petterson.
